2012

The Weyburn Beavers announce that Coach Dan Grant will be unable to return to Weyburn for a second year due to new job opportunities in Victoria where he is currently living with his new wife Karlee. The Weyburn Beavers executive has looked to our alumni in announcing the signing of Phil Curtis as head coach for the 2013 season. Phil finished his playing career being a 3-year veteran of the Weyburn Beavers and previously having played 4 years in Edmonton and for his home town of Sherwood Park AB of the WMBL where he was a team mate of Dan Grant’s. He also assisted Dan Grant with the pitching staff the last half of the 2012 season as a player/coach and in 2009 was pitching coach for Sherwood Park Midget AAA team under Head Coach Jim Bennett former San Francisco Giant. We feel that his familiarity with the league will be an asset when it comes to recruiting players as he knows what level of athlete is required. He understands our community and knows what we expect of the coaches and players. Phil is currently living in Weyburn and works for ComTech.

The executive of the Weyburn Beavers are hopeful that having Phil as the head coach will bring some stability and continuity to our program and are looking forward to the 2013 season.

BEAVERS GO TO SCHOOL
The Weyburn Beavers players and coaches are going to be spending some of their summer in schools all over Weyburn. Starting Monday, June 11 the players will be visiting students in both elementary and junior high schools to talk to them about the importance of education and teach the kids a little bit about where they come from. Some players even took the kids outside to teach them a few baseball skills. With players and coaches from all over Canada and the United States it makes for a unique experience for everyone involved.

The "Give Back To Schools" program is sponsored by Crescent Point Energy and will be continuing until the end of the school year. All students will be given a free ticket to a Weyburn Beavers game so they can come cheer on their favorite player.

The Beavers are also going to be running baseball clinics starting July 9th for players ages 7-11 in the Weyburn area.

The Weyburn Beavers are pleased to announce the signing of Dan Grant as an Assistant Coach for the upcoming WMBL season.
Coach Grant is in his first year as an assistant coach at Vancouver Island Baseball Institute in Nanaimo, British Columbia, after a playing career that earned him the honors of being inducted into the Parkland College Athletic Hall of Fame in January of 2011. While at Parkland College he led the team to the 2002 NJCAA World Series Championship on his way to be named World Series MVP. He moved on to play at Division 1 University of Northern Iowa where he led the Panthers in rbi's, homeruns, on base percentage, and second in batting average in his senior year. In 2008 Coach Grant won the WMBL batting title and was named league MVP while playing for the Sherwood Park Dukes.

Coach Grant is looking forward to helping Head Coach Angelo Nicolosi put together a Beavers team that can contend for a league title in an increasingly competitive WMBL.
