2009

The Weyburn Beavers have been hard at work recruiting players for the 2010 Season.
After a disappointing season in 2009, seeing 9 players from the roster injured or otherwise disabled for the season and numerous other nagging injuries, the Beavers look to rebuild for a strong campaign in 2010. The Beavers have had their work cut out for them in the offseason while only bringing back 1 of the 15 allowable import players. The good news is that there is a solid core of local and Canadian talent returning for the upcoming season. Local talents Jon Neuberger and Brad Weisgerber return for the 2010 season, along with local products Taylor VanDeSype and Braden Rudy. Neuberger began last season at second base for Weyburn until sustaining a season ending broken hand, while Weisgerber pitched 24 1/3 innings mostly out of the bullpen collecting 18 K's in his 12 appearances. VanDeSype and Rudy both played in limited playing time for Weyburn last season. Both played for the Weyburn AAA midget team last year and were called up at times to fill in for injured players. Neuberger and Weisgerber are in their Sophomore year at Williston State College, while VanDeSype and Rudy are Freshman at Williston. The four are joined by fellow teammate at Williston Daniel Perron, from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Perron returns as one of the leading hitters for the Beavers last season while spending time last season as an outfielder as well as catcher. Perron batted .298 in 131 ab's with 8 doubles, 21 RBI's, and a .412 slugging %. The other returning Canadian player is Derrek Wallace from Oxbow, SK. Wallace is a Sophomore at Douglas College and played First Base for the Beavers last season while fighting through a nagging knee injury. In limited playing time Wallace led the team in Home Runs with 4 and hit .264 with 17 RBI's in only 87 ab's. Wallace is expected to carry more of a load this year as his knee is feeling strong and healthy. Weyburn is proud to have a strong core of local talent to stabalize the foundation of this team and organization for years to come. Weyburn is bringing back Kevin Ryan as the lone Import returnee. The Sophomore at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga came in last season as one of Weyburn Starting pitchers and only pitched 7 innings before injuring his foot and missing the rest of the season. Kevin had 6K's and 2 BB's in those 7 innings while only giving up 1 ER. Weyburn is glad to welcome back all 7 of these young men and look forward to how they will perform this season.

Weyburn has kicked off it's recruiting by signing 6 new players for the 2010 season. Among the players signed are 3 Canadians and 3 Americans. Brad Grinstead, a Catcher from D III Hendrix College, joins the Weyburn Beaver this season. Grinstead, a Craig, Co native, is an experienced catcher who started for Hendrix last season while they won their first SCAC championship and advanced to the DIII national playoffs. Brad batted .323 in only 62 ab's last season for Hendrix while missing the first half of the season due to injury. Grant Malm, an Outfielder and First Baseman, comes to the Beavers as a Sophomore from Douglas College. Malm hit .375 with a ..412 On Base% as a Freshman last year while pitching 14 innings and collecting 10 K's. Grant hails from Coquitlam, BC. Tyler Durand, a Junior from Cal Lutheran, comes to the Beavers by way of Porterville College in Porterville, California. The Elkford, BC native was a second team All Central Valley Conference performer was also the Porterville College Male Scholar Athlete of the Year last year. Tyler is a Catcher/Utility player that also served as Porterville's Closer last year on the mound. Tyler hit .302 in 86 ab's last year with a .419 on base %. He also pitched 12 2/3 innings last year in 10 app. notching 3 saves. Weyburn is also glad to announce the signing of Alex Gale, a pitcher from West Virginia State University, from Toronto, ON. Gale is a Junior at WVSU after playing two season at Muscatine CC in Muscatine, Iowa. As a Sophomore at Muscatine Gale pitched 50 1/3, innings, had a record of 4-3 with 35 K's and 20 BB's. Another pitcher, TJ Millspaughs, joins the staff from Dodge City CC. Before attending Dodge City TJ spent a year at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, OR. Also joining the pitching staff this year from Ouchita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, AR is, Junior, Taylor Henry. Taylor played two seasons at Neosho CC in Chanute, KS before transfering to OBU. Taylor, a product of Boulder, CO, pitched 53 innings, compiling a 4.075 ERA with 44 K's and only 9 BB's. The Weyburn Beavers are pleased to announce the signing of Justin Wichert as Assistant Coach for the 2010 season. As an Assistant to Head Coach Terry Smith, Justin’s main role will be as the Beavers Pitching Coach and he brings an impressive background to that position.

As a College pitcher he played for Cowley County Community College and was drafted by the San Diego Padres. After Cowley he played for William Jewell College as a starting pitcher and after his eligibility he continued to help Coach at William Jewell.

During the summers of 2006 and 2007 Justin pitched in the Northern League, Frontier League and the South Coast League. Last summer Justin served as the Pitching Coach for the Laramie Colts in the Mountain Collegiate Baseball League and he is currently the Pitching Coach for Dodge City Community College in the Jayhawk Community College Conference.

During his professional career Justin had the opportunity to play under some great managers the most notable being Cecil Fielder. With his connections in both the College and Professional ranks we look to Justin to help Head Coach Terry Smith to recruit a Beavers team that will not only make the playoffs but will make a push towards a WMBL championship.

When the last out was made in Regina on July 29, it marked the end of season for the Weyburn Beavers. This team endured more than its share of injuries and departures; from the start of the season, we lost 6 pitchers and 3 position players from our roster for the entire season.

On behalf of our entire organization I would like to thank our fans, business sponsors, and billets; their contributions to our ball club are what make it possible to bring the WMBL to Weyburn.

With the return of Head Coach Terry Smith and a core group of returning players, 2010 holds promise to be a turn-around year for our ball club.
